As builders, entrepreneurs, creatives, and leaders, we spend a great deal of time thinking about what comes next. We focus on the next client, project, investment, promotion, film, market, or milestone. That forward-looking mindset helps us grow, but it can also make us overlook where we are now. We become so occupied with what is still missing that we stop appreciating what has already happened, what has already been built, and who helped us get here.
Lately, I have been reflecting on the discipline of gratitude. I do not mean gratitude as a polite response or a temporary feeling after good news. I mean gratitude as a way of seeing the journey clearly. For anyone building something meaningful, gratitude requires intentional reflection. You have to think well to thank well. If you never pause to remember, you will judge your life only by the goals you have not yet reached.
Reflection changes perspective because it allows us to compare where we are now with where we once stood. The opportunity that now feels normal may once have been the breakthrough you prayed for. The business you believe is still too small may have started as an idea you were afraid to share. The team you wish were larger may include people who chose to believe in your vision before there was much evidence that it would work. Today’s reality may not be the final destination, but it may still be an answer to yesterday’s prayer.
This is why gratitude belongs in the building process, not only at the finish line. We often tell ourselves that we will be grateful when the deal closes, when the company reaches a certain level, when the film is released, when the audience grows, or when the money finally reflects the work. There is nothing wrong with wanting progress, but there is danger in postponing appreciation. When gratitude is always attached to the next achievement, we can spend our entire lives moving the standard and never recognizing what God has already done.
Gratitude also changes how we lead because meaningful work is rarely accomplished alone. Every business, production, organization, and movement carries the fingerprints of many people: mentors who gave advice, partners who opened doors, employees who stayed through difficult seasons, customers who trusted an early version, investors who took a chance, family members who sacrificed, friends who encouraged, and people who prayed when the outcome was uncertain. Acknowledging those contributions keeps a builder humble and reminds us that while we may have carried the vision, many people helped carry the weight.
I have also learned that remembrance is part of thanksgiving. Throughout history, people have built memorials because some moments are too important to leave to memory alone. Families preserve photographs and stories. Nations build monuments. Organizations remember their beginnings. In Scripture, God repeatedly instructed His people to remember what He had done. They built altars, observed feasts, and told the next generation the stories of His faithfulness. The memorial was not for God’s benefit. It was for theirs. They needed something that would protect them from forgetting.
Builders need memorials too, though they do not have to be made of stone. A journal entry, a photograph from the first office, the first contract, or an early email can remind us that what now feels ordinary once required faith and courage. Remembering protects us from entitlement and helps us honor the journey honestly.
Gratitude must also include the hard parts of the journey. That does not mean pretending pain was pleasant or calling every disappointment good. It means recognizing that difficult experiences can still produce something valuable. A failed plan can expose weak assumptions, a delay can develop patience, and a difficult partnership can teach better boundaries. Gratitude does not erase what was hard; it allows hardship to become wisdom rather than pain alone.
For me, however, gratitude begins at an even deeper place. When I reflect on my life, I know that if not for God, I do not know where I would be or what I would have accomplished. I know I have worked hard. I know I have made sacrifices, taken risks, learned, planned, and kept moving. But hard work alone does not explain my life. There have been too many doors I could not have opened for myself, too many situations I could not have controlled, and too many seasons where the strength I needed was greater than what I had.
It is Jesus who did it. He helped me. He sustained me. He gave me wisdom when I did not know what to do, strength when I was tired, peace when the future was uncertain, and courage when the next step was not clear. My life is not what it used to be, and I cannot tell that story honestly without giving Him the glory. Every opportunity, lesson, relationship, recovery, and new beginning carries evidence of His grace.
That is why I believe we should wholeheartedly express and not be quiet about our thanksgiving. We are often very comfortable being loud about our achievements. We announce the awards, promotions, contracts, launches, funding, releases, and milestones. We should celebrate those things, but we should be just as willing to say who helped us, who stood with us, and most importantly, who made the journey possible. Thanksgiving should not be hidden behind the language of strategy and success.
God made me a voice, and I do not want to use that voice only to talk about what I am building. I want to use it to testify about His faithfulness. When we tell the truth about God’s help, we create a memorial for ourselves and for the people listening. We remind others that success is not always the result of perfect conditions; sometimes it is the evidence that grace met a person who kept showing up.
As I continue building, I do not want to wait until every goal is complete before I give thanks. I am grateful for where I am, even while believing there is more ahead. I am grateful for the process because it is shaping my judgment, character, faith, and capacity. I am grateful for every experience and for the people who have invested in my purpose with money, access, work, encouragement, prayer, patience, or belief.
So before moving immediately to your next target, take time to reflect. Remember what you once prayed for. Remember the people who helped you. Remember the lessons the hard seasons taught you. Remember the doors God opened, the ones He closed, and the strength He gave you to continue. You have to think well to thank well, and that reflection keeps ambition from turning into dissatisfaction.
The destination matters. We are building toward something, and we should pursue it with excellence, discipline, and courage. But the journey deserves appreciation too. The process is where our capacity is developed, our character is tested, our relationships are formed, and our faith is strengthened. When I look at my own life, I know one thing with certainty: it is Jesus who did it. And because God made me a voice, I will use that voice to be loud about my thanksgiving.
