Build Afraid

Why the people who build extraordinary things learn to move before fear gives them permission

This morning, I was speaking out loud and asking God what I should write about this week. I genuinely didn’t know. I kept saying, “God, give me the topic. What am I supposed to talk about today? My daughter Valerie was nearby, listening to me, and without hesitation, she said, “You need to talk about being fearless.” I stopped because it was such a simple answer, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized how much fearlessness has shaped my journey as an entrepreneur.

Building requires courage. Rebuilding requires even more. And being fearless does not mean that you never experience fear. I have been afraid plenty of times. I have questioned decisions, wondered whether an investment would pay off, worried about whether a project would work, and considered what would happen if something I was attempting failed. Fearlessness is not the absence of those thoughts. It is the ability to acknowledge them without allowing them to make every decision for you.

Entrepreneurship is fundamentally uncertain. Whether you are producing a film, starting a technology company, opening a daycare, developing a product, or building a service business, you are constantly making decisions without knowing exactly how the story will end. There is no business plan detailed enough to eliminate uncertainty, and no amount of research that guarantees success. At some point, every builder has to move from analysis to action.

One of the first places fearlessness becomes necessary is when you see an opportunity that others don’t yet see. Some of the greatest opportunities in business exist precisely because there isn’t universal agreement about them. Once everybody agrees that something is a great opportunity, chances are many people are already pursuing it. Builders often have to believe in an idea while other people are still questioning it.

That can be uncomfortable. People may tell you the market isn’t ready. They may question why you’re investing so much money. They may tell you someone else has already tried it. They may think your vision is too big or your expectations are unrealistic. Sometimes they will be correct, which is why courage must always be accompanied by wisdom. But sometimes the reason they cannot see the opportunity is simply that it hasn’t been built yet.

Entrepreneurs have to become comfortable with the possibility of being misunderstood. If I needed everyone to understand every decision I have made before I made it, I would probably still be waiting to start many of the things I have built. There are moments when you have to listen to advice, examine the numbers, understand the risks, and then decide that you are willing to move anyway.

Fearlessness is also required because entrepreneurs rarely have complete information. In established organizations, there may be historical data, approval processes, departments, and multiple layers of people involved in decisions. Entrepreneurship can be very different. Sometimes you are making an important decision with 70 percent of the information you wish you had because waiting for the remaining 30 percent could cost you the opportunity.

That doesn’t mean being careless. Some decisions require extensive due diligence because they are difficult to reverse. But many business decisions are correctable. You can change the marketing campaign. You can adjust pricing. You can test something on a smaller scale. You can change strategy. You can hire differently next time. You can pivot. The problem is that fear can make every decision feel permanent, and when that happens, builders become stuck.

I have learned that sometimes the cost of not deciding is greater than the cost of making an imperfect decision. Opportunities have windows. Markets change. People move on. Capital runs out. Momentum disappears. You cannot spend your entire entrepreneurial journey waiting until you feel completely certain because complete certainty rarely comes.

Then there is failure, perhaps the greatest test of fearlessness. When you build long enough, something will eventually not work. Not every idea will succeed. Not every investment will produce the return you expected. Every partnership will not work. Every person you hire will not be the right person. Not every project will become what you imagined.

The danger is allowing a failed strategy to become a statement about who you are.

Experienced builders learn to separate themselves from the outcome and turn failure into information. What did this teach me? What assumption was wrong? Was the idea wrong, or was the execution wrong? Was the timing wrong? Did I choose the wrong partner? Did we spend too much? Did we move too quickly—or not quickly enough? Those questions turn disappointment into research and development. Sometimes the tuition for learning in business is expensive, but if you extract the lesson, the experience does not have to be wasted.

And this is where courage becomes even more important: having the courage to rebuild.

Starting the first time can actually be easier because you don’t know everything that can go wrong. You have excitement, ambition, and possibility pushing you forward. Rebuilding is different. Now you know the cost. You remember the disappointment. You understand how difficult it can be to raise money. You know what it feels like when something doesn’t perform as expected or when someone you trusted disappoints you. And after experiencing all of that, you have to decide whether you are willing to build again.

But rebuilding should not mean repeating. Courage without wisdom becomes recklessness. When you rebuild, you should rebuild better. Better contracts. Better financial controls. Better questions. Better boundaries. Better partnerships. Better understanding of your market. Better awareness of your own weaknesses. The purpose of surviving difficult seasons isn’t simply to prove that you survived. It is to become a better builder because of them.

There is another kind of fear we don’t discuss enough: the fear that comes after success. When you have very little, taking a risk can sometimes feel easier because there is less to lose. Once you’ve built something, people depend on you. You have employees, customers, investors, a reputation, and previous successes that people expect you to repeat. Suddenly, another bold move feels much more consequential.

Yet growth still requires risk. The decisions that got you here will not necessarily take you where you are trying to go next. Sometimes you have to become uncomfortable again. You have to enter another market, make another investment, build another team, release another product, produce another film, or pursue an opportunity much bigger than anything you’ve attempted before.

For me, this is also where faith enters the conversation. I believe there are moments when God gives us direction without giving us the entire map. We want confirmation of every step, every resource, and every outcome before we move, but sometimes we receive enough light for the next decision. Faith does not eliminate the responsibility to plan, research, budget, and seek wise counsel. But after you have done those things, there may still be uncertainty. At some point, you have to move.

Perhaps that is why Valerie’s answer stayed with me. I was looking for something complicated to write about, and my nine-year-old gave me two words: “Be fearless.”

If you’re building something right now, fear will probably visit you. If you’re rebuilding after something didn’t work, it may visit even more frequently. Listen to what fear is telling you. Examine the risk. Learn from your mistakes. Get the information you need. Pray. Seek counsel. Make the adjustments. But don’t automatically give fear the final vote.

You don’t have to feel fearless to build fearlessly. Sometimes courage is simply deciding that despite everything you know could go wrong, you still believe enough in what could go right to take the next step.

And sometimes, that next step is building again.
